Das Residenzstipendium im Berliner Wedding ist eine gute Sache: Drei Monate Leben und Arbeiten in der ablenkungsarmen Umgebung des nördlichen Humboldthains zwischen bunten Billigshops, Neondönern und keinen Kneipen. Wo die Welt am meisten glitzert ist die Wüste nah. Ein Stipendium für die Künstlerin Silke Thoss aka Silky, die ihre Arbeiten am kommenden Freitag und am Ende ihres Aufenthalts im nahen Kulturpalast Wedding präsentieren wird.

Thematisch ist die Malerei von Silky in der zwischenmenschlichen Wüste angesiedelt. Hier stehen Wohnwagen im Nichts, Frittenbuden auf menschenleeren Rastplätzen und grelle Werbeschilder, die wie Spukbilder auf die Anwesenheit der Künstlerin verweisen: Silky`s Inn.

Silky installiert raumgreifend. Alles präsentiert sich als Produkt und alles erscheint käuflich. Ein Kunstsupermarkt als Universum. Selbstportraits, Backsteinwände und die Hoffnung gebende Produktpalette der Neuen Welt auf Holzplatte, gemalt in der Werbeästhetik afrikanischer Frisiersalons. Zweidimensional, dreidimensional und dazwischen die Künstlerin mit Akkordeon und Gesang. Silky kann ihre Bilder auch singen.

Während ihres Aufenthalts im Wedding sind neue Lieder entstanden, die als Textzeilen -Fragmente auch in neuen, großformatigen Bildern auftauchen.
“If I were you I would like to be me”: Zwischenmenschliche Wüsten sind auch dabei.

Silke Thoss aka Silky, *1968 in Osnabrück, 1996 Master of Fine Arts, Skulptur, Chelsea College of Art& Design London, lebt und arbeitet in Hamburg. Die Künstlerin ist neben ihrer visuellen Arbeit als Musikerin tätig (Akkordeon, Gesang Komposition + Text ). Auf dem Schweizer Kultlabel Voodoo Rhythm veröffentlichte sie bereits mehrere Alben und tourte weltweit mit Ihrer Band The Watzloves sowie ihrer neusten Band Hoo Doo Girl.

The residence scholarship in Berlin-Wedding is a good thing: three months live and work in the distraction-free environment of the northern Humboldthain between coloured cheap stores, neon-kebabs and no pubs. In places the world is most sparkling, the desert draws near. A scholarship for the artist Silke Thoss aka Silky, who presents her work at the approach Kulturpalast Wedding on next Friday – and at the end of her residence.

Thematically, the painting of Silky bases in the interhuman wasteland. Here you find caravans standing in the nowhere, fish-and-chips shops at deserted motorway stations and dazzling billboards refering like spooky pictures to the presence of the artist: Silky’s Inn.

Silky installs extensively. Everything presents itself as product and everything appears as buyable – like an art-supermarket as universe. Self-portraits, brick walls and the hope-giving assortment of the new world on wooden panel painted in the advertising aesthetic of African hairdresser’s. Two-dimensionally, three-dimensionally, and in the middle: the artist with accordion and vocals. Silky can sing her pictures, too.

New Songs developed during her stay in Berlin-Wedding also appear as text line-fragments and in new large-format pictures.

“If I were you I would like to be me”: Interhuman wastelands are part of it, too.

Silke Thoss aka Silky, *1968 in Osnabrück, 1996 Master of Fine Arts, Sculpture, Chelsea College of Art & Design London, lives and works in Hamburg. The artist is also, next to her visual activity, a musician (accordion, vocals & text). She released a number of albums on the Swiss cult label Vodoo Rhythm and toured worldwide with her band The Watzloves as well with her newest one Hoo Doo Girl.

59 Zeichnungen- und weniger ist weniger. Die Künstler Kotulla und Hennig, unlängst zurückgekehrt vom gemeinsamen Betonworkshop in Rüdersdorf, arbeiten in der Basisstation. Hier wird exakt gearbeitet. Hier kommt der Grashalm vor Landschaft und Form- vorerst- vor Inhalt. Was noch nichts ist kann auch nichts werden. Wer Landschaft einfordert ohne den Grashalm zu sehen, hat Angst oder ist zu müde hinzuschauen.

Die Zeichnungen von Michael Hennig und Andreas Kotulla thematisieren, ergänzt durch einige Arbeiten auf Leinwand, auf diskrete Weise jeweils unterschiedliche Landschaften. Ist in den Arbeiten Michael Hennigs die Wiesenlandschaft der Norddeutschen Tiefebene präsent (z.B. „Landschaft bei Strom“), verweisen die als „Deserts“ betitelten Zeichnungen Andreas Kotullas auf die Topologie der Wüste. Auch seine an Briefmarken erinnernden Formen deuten auf eine Distanz hin, die es zu überwinden oder zu vermessen gilt.

Doch ist mit dieser Distanz diejenige gemeint, die dem Vorgang des Zeichnens, als stets in sich selbst gespaltener Handlung, eigen ist, und die Hennig und Kotulla in ihrer Ausstellung untersuchen.

Gerade weil es eine Untersuchung auf freier Strecke und mit offenem Ausgang ist, treten die Arbeiten in einer undistanzierten Klarheit an den Betrachter heran. Sie erzählen nicht vom Ankommen. Kotulla und Hennig als Reisende lassen sich beim Reisen beobachten.

Die Ausstellung *59 Zeichnungen* ist die zweite Ausstellung der beiden Künstler im Kulturpalast Wedding.

59 drawings and less is still less. The artists Kotulla and Hennig who recently returned from the collaborative cement workshop in Rüdersdorf are working at the base station. Here, working is precisely. Here, blade of grass comes before landscape and shape (for now) before content. Things which are still nothing won’t be anything at all. Those who claim landscape without seeing culms are afraid or just too tired to look closely.

The drawings of Michael Hennig and Andreas Kotulla each thematise discreetly different landscapes complemented by some works on canvas. On the one hand we have the North German Plain landscape with meadows (e.g. “Landscape with river”) by Michael Hennig, on the other hand you find the as “Deserts” termed drawings by Andreas Kotulla which refer to the topololgy of wasteland. Also his stamp reminding shapes are indicative of a distance which is to overcome and to survey. Nevertheless, this distance means such a one which is inherent in the process of drawing – as an act steadily rived in itself – and which Kotulla and Hennig investigate in their exhibition.

Simply because there is an investigation in a free way and with open ending, the works make approaches to the observer in a non-distanced clarity. They don’t tell about arrival. Kotulla and Hennig allow us watching them as travellers on a journey.

The exhibition *59 drawings is the second one of both artists at the Kulturpalast.

Als parasitärer Kunstraum freuen wir uns den Messestand der Galerie Walden um einen dunklen Schacht zu erweitern:

Den Schacht erleuchten wir durch zwei Videoarbeiten von Bernd Böhlendorf und Uli Happe. BeideVideos entstanden bei der Veranstaltung *Helter Skelter* Mitte Mai im Kulturpalast.

Während Happe die 12 Stunden und 36 Künstler von einer in Deckenhöhe angebrachten Kamera beobachten lässt und im Zeitraffer präsentiert, stürzt sich Böhlendorf ins Geschehen und dokumentiert in seinem halbstündigen Video das Durcheinander von Künstlern, Musikern und Publikum vor ständig wechselnden Hintergründen und in gefährlicher Nahdistanz.

Im Keller ganz hinten wird alles wieder lebendig.

Rechts oben anfangen und links unten aufhören. Koltermann und Sennf bearbeiten den Raum radikal und gemeinsam und lassen die jeweils eigene Arbeitsweise als Bedingung der Arbeit des anderen erscheinen. Was auf den ersten Blick beliebig angeordnet aussieht, ein hingeworfenes Handtuch als Farbtupfer im Raum, eine weggestellte Collage, ist eine klare Antwort auf- an anderen Orten- in den Raum gestellte Fragen. Es könnte anders sein, aber es ist so. Wäre das Handtuch weg, könnte man über den Rest auch nicht reden.

Während SENNF (abgeleitet von Senn, Sinn, Sennsitiv, Sennestadt und Senncake) den Kulturpalast mit Skulptur, Zeichnung, Farbe und Wortbildern vermisst, basiert Koltermanns Arbeit auf dokumentarischen Fotoserien und Videos, die schemenhaft vorgefundene Innen- und Außenräume aufnehmen und in eine neue geometrisch- verpixelte Parallelwelt überführen.

Beide künstlerische Positionen durchdringen einander, speisen sich aus konstruktivistischer Urmaterie wie Fachwerkhaus und Fußgängerzone und kommen vom Kleinen aufs Große und Ganze. Daß der Betrachter trotzdem einfach rechts oben anfangen kann ist das Erlebnis dieser Gesamtinstallation.

Für die Ausstellung KOLTERMANN UND SENNF betreten beide erstmals den Kosmos des anderen. Das Ergebnis ist vom 29.08. bis zum 6.09. 2009 im Kulturpalastes Wedding zu bestaunen.

Beginning at the top on the right and ending at lower left. Koltermann and Sennf treat the room radically and let each own method appear as a condition of the other one’s work. At first sight it seems to be arranged randomly. A thrown down towel as a dash of colour in the room; a put away collage is a precise answer to asked questions, which you find at other places in the room. It could be different, but that it is. If the towel is away, we cannot talk about the rest.
While Senff (derived from Senn, Sense, Sennsitive, Sennestadt and Senncake) measures the Kulturpalast with sculpture, drawing, colour and “word image”; Koltermann’s work is based on documentary photo series and videos which assimilate the structural encountered interior such as exterior and convert it to a new geometric-pixelized parallel universe.

Both artistic conceptions impregnate each other; energize them from constructivist ylem like half-timber house and pedestrian area – and come from little to large and the whole thing. The experience of the exhibition is that the observer can start at the top on the right anyway.

For the exhibition KOLTERMANN AND SENNF both artists enter the cosmos of each other for the first time. The result can be marvelled at from August, 29^th until September, 6^th 2009 at the Kulturpalast Wedding.

Amerikawochen 3. Ein Toter und ein Lebender. Zurück im Norden begeben wir uns gemeinsam mit dem US-Amerikaner Thomas W. Harris IV. auf die Spuren des verstorbenen deutschen Malers Hermann Theis.

Mission trifft Passion. Diese Doppelausstellung ist die Folge einer Begegnung zweier Grenzgänger. Der Amerikaner Thomas W. Harris IV., Künstler, Künstlerdokumentator und Kontinentalreisender in vielerlei Missionen trifft 2001 den Berliner Maler Hermann Theis in dessen Schöneberger Atelier. Hermann Theis arbeitet seriell an abstrakten Gemälden, die aneinandergereiht vor ihm auf dem Boden liegen. Er setzt Bewegung in Malerei um und arbeitet mit Modellen. Harris tanzt für ihn und es erscheint ihm als besondere Ehre, dass er der einzige männliche Tänzer ist. Von nun an dokumentiert er die Arbeit von Theis mit der Videokamera.

Zwei Jahre nach dem Tod des Kollegen zeigt Thomas W. Harris IV. im Kulturpalast Wedding einen sehr persönlichen Blick auf die Arbeit von Hermann Theis. Er präsentiert neben Fotos auch je ein Gemälde aus den Serien „Zarina“, „Dolores“, „Tahmis“, „Valderes“ & „Celeste“, und sein auf einer Vernissage von Hermann Theis aufgenommenes Video „Deeper Kind of Blue“. Harris als Überlebender öffnet einen Vorhang für die Werke von Theis und konfrontiert diese mit eigenen Arbeiten, die installativ präsentiert werden. Neben der Serie „Drawing Lions”, bestehend aus eigenen und bei Kollegen bestellten Löwenzeichnungen, zeigt Harris zwei multimediale Installationen, in denen es um nichts geringeres als um die Überschreitung der Grenzen von Kunst und Kommerz und Leben und Tod geht. Eine Mission schwierigen Grades, zu der wir hiermit einladen.

Hermann Theis wurde 1948 in Kusel /Pfalz geboren und starb 2008 in Berlin. Nach einem Ingenieurstudium in Vermessungstechnik widmete er sich nur noch der Bildenden Kunst und absolvierte von 1982-1984 ein Privatstudium im Atelier von Wolfgang Wàclaw in Berlin. Seine Mal-, Video- und Fotoaktionen führten ihn nach Spanien, Italien und Griechenland. Hermann Theis` Arbeiten wurden in zahlreichen Einzelausstellungen gezeigt und sind in mehreren öffentlichen Sammlungen vertreten.

Thomas W. Harris IV. *1972, wuchs in einer Kleinstadt in Nord-Michigan neben einem Atomkraftwerk auf. Er spielte mit dem Gedanken zu den Marines zu gehen, entschied sich aber dagegen und wurde stattdessen wegen kleinerer Delikte inhaftiert. Er begann Songtexte und Essays zu schreiben und zog nach Seattle, wo er als RadioDJ und Kinobetreiber arbeitete. Nach einem musikalischen Zwischenstopp in Kauai /Hawaii kam er 1997 nach Berlin, heiratete, wurde geschieden, und arbeitet an Projekten.

American Weeks 3. One dead and one living. Back in the north we hit the road together with the American Thomas W. Harris IV for the tracks of the late German painter Hermann Theis.

Mission meets passion. This double exhibition is the result of a meeting of two border crossers. The American Thomas W. Harris IV, artist, artist’s documentator and continental traveller in variously missions meets in 2001 the Berlin painter Hermann Theis in his Schöneberger studio. Hermann Theis worked in series on abstract paintings which lie lined up before him on the ground. He transformed movement in painting and worked with models. Harris danced for him and it appeared to him a special honour that he was the only male dancer. From this on he documented the work of Theis with the video camera.

Two years after the death of the colleague, Thomas W. Harris IV. presents a very personal look at the work of Hermann Theis in the Kulturpalast Wedding. Beside photos he also shows paintings from the series “Zarina”, “Dolores”, “Tahmis”, “Valderes” & “Celeste”, one of each, and the video “Deeper Kind of Blue” taken up at an art opening of Hermann Theis. Harris as a survivor opens a curtain for the works of Theis and confronts them with own works which are presented as an installation. Beside the series “Drawing Lions”, consisting of own and other people lion’s drawings, Harris shows two multimedia installations dealing with nothing less than crossing the boundaries of art and commerce and life and death. A highly difficult mission to which we would like to invite you.

Hermann Theis was born in 1948 in Kusel / Palatinate and died in 2008 in Berlin. After an engineer’s study in measurement technology he gave himself over to art. 1982-1984 he finished a private study in the studio of Wolfgang Wàclaw in Berlin. His performances of painting, video and photo led him to Spain, Italy and Greece. Hermann Theis` works were shown in numerous single exhibitions and are represented in several public collections.

Thomas W. Harris IV *1972, grew up in a provincial town in North Michigan next to a nuclear power station. He played with the thought to go to the marine, however, decided against it and was arrested because of smaller offences. He started to write song texts and essays and moved to Seattle where he worked as a Radio DJ and film operator. After a musical interstop in Kauai / Hawaii he came in 1997 to Berlin, married, was divorced, and works on projects.

Die Filme gehen weiter und am Freitag ist Südamerika die Antwort auf Nordamerika. Wir freuen uns, in Zusammenarbeit mit der nomadischen Galerie Microwesten, das Videoprojekt „Exquisite Corpse“ (ECVP) der brasilianischen Künstlerin Kika Nicolela präsentieren zu können.

Exquisite Corpse ist eine Video-Zusammenarbeit von 36 Künstlern aus 16 Ländern in ständiger Fortsetzung. Das Projekt basiert auf der Erfindung „Exquisite Corpse“ der Surrealisten.

In diesem Spiel wird ein Zeichenblatt so gefaltet, daß jeder Mitwirkende nur einen kleinen Teil der Zeichnung des Vorgängers sieht und seine eigene Zeichnung ausgehend davon beginnt. Nach dem Auseinanderfalten des Blatts präsentieren sich überraschende Verschmelzungen der Striche und fortlaufende Figuren.

Das ist auch der Ansatz von Kika Nicolelas Videoprojekt:

Von ihr eingeladen, wirken 8 bis 9 Künstler an einem Video zu einem Thema mit. Ein Künstler erstellt ein 1-2 minütiges Video und sendet dies an Kika Nicolela. Diese schickt die letzten 10 Sekunden an einen weiteren Künstler, der daran anknüpft und wiederum einen ca. 1-2 Minuten langen Beitrag erstellt.

Das vorläufige Endergebnis sind 9 Staffeln (Exquisite Corpse Vol. 1 bis Vol.9) der „digitalen blind dates“.

Im Kulturpalast Wedding präsentiert Kika Nicolela Exquisite Corpse vol. 1. An diesem Abend möchte Sie weitere Künstler einladen an der nächsten Auflage des ECVP teilzunehmen.

Kika Nicolela (*1976 ) arbeitet multimedial zwischen Film, Installation und Fotografie. Sie studierte Film an der University of California in Los Angeles und machte 2000 ihren Abschluß in Film und Video an der University of Sao Paolo/Brasilien. Ihre preisgekrönten Filme wurden seitdem auf Filmfestivals in mehr als 30 Ländern gezeigt.

The Exquisite Corpse Video Project (ECVP) is a unique video collaboration of 36 artists from 16 countries, inspired by the Surrealist invention, the “Exquisite Corpse”.

In the Surrealist ‘game’, a paper is folded such that each contributor sees only a small portion of the previous contributor’s work, and begins his own work from that small portion. When the last participant is finished, the sheet is unfolded to reveal a strangely divergent, yet contiguous form or figure.

This is also the approach of Kika Nicolelas’ video project:
Invited by Nicolelas, there are eight or nine artists who contribute in one video dealing a specific subject. One artist creates a video up to one or two minutes and sends it to Kika Nicolela who hands the last ten seconds of it on another participant so that he can tie in with an additional one to two minutes-segment.

The preliminary results are nine series (Equisite Corpse Vol. 1 to 9) of “digital blind dates”.
Kika Nicolela will present Exquisite Corpse Vol. 1 at the Kulturpalast Wedding. This evening she wants to invite more artists to contribute to the next edition of ECVP.

Kika Nicolela (born 1976) works multimedial-based between film, installation and photography. She studied film at the University of California in Los Angeles and graduated in film and video at the University of Sao Paolo/Brazil in 2000. Since then, her award-winning films were shown at film festivals in more than 30 countries.

2 Sachen, pünktlich zur Europawahl:
Das Ende der Dekadenz und der filmende Stadtrat mit Kuriositäten vom Rand des Knoblauchslands.

Es geht voran und wir möchten Euch zur Finissage der Ausstellung *spiegelblank* der kanadischen Malerin Emmy Skensved am Sonntag, dem 07.Juni 2009 einladen. Die Finissage beginnt um 20 Uhr, die Ausstellung ist bereits ab 16 Uhr geöffnet.

Begleitend dazu zeigt der Nürnberger Filmemacher Stephan Grosse-Grollmann ab ca 21 Uhr super 8- Filme zwischen Kunst und Klamauk . Die Filme aus der Zeit von 1973 bis heute werden experimentell projeziert und vom Filmemacher vor Ort musikalisch bearbeitet.

`Wählt mich doch, ich tu`s doch auch.“Stephan Grosse-Grollmann, Mitbegründer der Nürnberger Partei DIE GUTEN (www.die-guten.de/) und für diese seit 1996 im Stadtrat sitzend, ist ein filmender Visionär und mehr als eine Spaßpartei. Der Spaß beginnt, wo es anfängt Ernst zu werden.

AEG-Waschmaschinenkreise auf Bahnhofsplätzen, Stadtra(t)deln oder Aktionen die auf den Unterschied zwischen richtigem Bäcker und Brötchenerwärmer verweisen: Nichts bleibt unbeachtet und die Themen liegen auf der Strasse.

Oder im Agrargebiet. Im Kulturpalast zeigt Stephan Grosse-Grollmann einen Zusammenschnitt seines Filmschaffens. In monumentaler Verlangsamung überschlagen sich Themen und Töne, im Knoblauchsland werden Leitern über Wiesen getragen und städtische Volksfeste enden im experimentellen Geblubber.

Darauf eine Bratwurst ohne Senf. Wir freuen uns auf Euren Besuch.

Going ahead, we would like to invite you to the finissage of the exhibition “spiegelblank” by Canadian painter Emmy Skensved at Sunday, 7th June 2009. The finissage starts at 8 pm, the exhibition already can be seen from 4 pm.

Accompanying to this the Nuremberg filmmaker Stephan Grosse-Grollmann will show Super-8 films between art and slapstick comedy at about 9 pm. These films, which were created from 1973 until today, will be projected experimentally and treated live with music by the filmmaker.

“Vote for me!, I just do the same.” Stephan Grosse-Grollmann, co-founder of the Nuremberg party “DIE GUTEN” (www.die-guten.de) and also their alderman since 1996, is a filming visionary and considerably more than a fun party. Fun starts at the beginning of seriousness.

AEG-washer circuits at station places, city cycle tours or initiatives which refer to the difference between a genuine baker and a roll heater: Nothing passes unnoticed and subjects can be found on the street.

Alternatively you find them in an agricultural-field. At the Kulturpalast, Stephan Grosse-Grollmann will show a montage of his film works. Subjects and sounds tumble in a monumental deceleration, ladders are carried across meadows in garlic land and civic folk festivals end up in an experimental twaddle.

Let’s have a Bratwurst without mustard to that. We expect everything and are looking forward to welcome you.

Die Finissage wird begleitet von einer Filminstallation von Stefan Grosse- Grollmann.

Die kanadische Malerin Emmy Skensved ist fasziniert von Ornamenten, Verzierungen, Verzierungen und deren Fragmente und Stuckdecken. Diese Vorliebe führte sie geradewegs in den Kulturpalast. Steht man in dessen Mitte und blickt nach oben, präsentiert sich die Stuckdecke als verschnörkeltes Ende des leeren Raums.
Emmy Skensved verweist in ihren Bildern auf die Leere, indem sie die Konzentration des Betrachters auf deren Grenze lenkt. Der Blick verliert sich in ornamentalen Rahmenelementen, Mustern und Verzierungen. Im Allgemeinen wird Verzierung als unterstützende Form für etwas Weiteres, Hauptsächliches verwendet; für ein Bild oder einen Text. In ihren Arbeiten jedoch lässt Skensved den Hauptinhalt weg, so dass der Betrachter auf das Grenzmuster verwiesen wird. Diese Grenze existiert, um auf sich selbst zu verweisen, die Verzierung wird zum Inhalt des Bilds.

Ausgehend davon und nicht überraschend, beschäftigt sich Skensved in ihrer gegenwärtigen Arbeit mit Dekadenz. Sie erforscht, wie übermäßiger Genuss von etwas anscheinend Gutem und Schönen zu Zerfall und Degeneration führen kann. Das Ergebnis des Forschens wird in ihren neusten Bildern gezeigt, auf denen sich Leerraum und Grenzraum ununterscheidbar vermischen.

Auch im Kulturpalast Wedding wird Emmy Skensved ihre Untersuchungen zu Verzierung, Dekadenz und Zerfall fortsetzen. Hauptbestandteil ihrer Rauminstallation sind zwei großformatige Bilder, die den Raum in zwei Hälften teilen und in Dialog mit der vorgefundenen Stuckdecke treten. Beide Bilder treten nicht nur als Spiegel des jeweils anderen auf, sondern spiegeln auch die Symmetrie des Raums wieder und verdoppeln ihn. Auf diese Weise verdoppelt sich auch Frau Skensveds Ausstellung.

Zwei Räume, zwei Ausstellungen, zwei Stuckdecken. Das ist Dekadenz.

Emmy Skensved (*1981, Kingston, Kanada) lebt und arbeitet in Berlin und Toronto, Kanada. Sie ist Absolventin des Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto und absolvierte 2007 den Masterstudiengang an der University of Waterloo in Kanada. Ihre Arbeiten wurden in mehreren Einzel- und Gruppenausstellungen in Kanada, Italien und Deutschland gezeigt. 2008 hatte sie im Rahmen der Royal Bank of Canada Competition eine Ausstellung in der Kanadischen Nationalgalerie in Ottawa. Skensveds Bilder sind im Besitz mehrerer privater und öffentlicher Sammlungen. Die Ausstellung im Kulturpalast Wedding International ist ihre erste Einzelausstellung in Deutschland.

The Canadian painter Emmy Skensved is fascinated by ornament and decoration, and their various manifestations. This predilection led her directly to the Kulturpalast. If one stands in the middle of the gallery and looks upwards, one is presented with flourishing plasterwork within the otherwise empty room.
Emmy Skensved refers to emptiness in her paintings, directing the concentration of the viewer to the peripheral border. One’s gaze loses itself in the ornamental elements of the frame, patterns and decorations. Generally ornament is used as a support for something else; for a picture or a text. Nevertheless, in her works Skensved leaves out the central ‘content’, so that the viewer is referred back to the border pattern. This border exists only to support itself, and the decoration therefore becomes the content of the piece.
Consequently it is no surprise that Skensved deals in her present work with the theme of decadence. She investigates how excess of something seemingly good and beautiful can lead to decay and degeneration. The result of the investigation is shown in her most recent pictures in which the boundaries between the empty space and border have become undistinguishable.

In the Kulturpalast Wedding Emmy Skensved continues her investigation of ornament, decadence and decay. A main part of her installation are two large-scale paintings which divide the space into two halves and enter into a dialogue with the plaster moulding. Both pictures appear not only as a mirror of each other, but also reflect the symmetry of the space. In this manner, Skensved’s exhibition also doubles itself. Two rooms, two exhibitions, two crown mouldings. This is decadence. Emmy Skensved (*1981, Kingston, Canada) lives and works in Berlin and Toronto, Canada. She is a graduate of the Ontario college of Art and Design in Toronto and obtained her Master’s of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Waterloo in Canada in 2007. Her works have been in several solo exhibitions and group exhibitions in Canada, Italy and Germany. In 2008 she participated in the RBC Painting Competition which opened at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa. Skensved’s works are in the possession of several private and public collections. The exhibition in the Kulturpalast Wedding International is her first solo show in Germany.
